In February 1997 the federation’s general secretary asked each member church whether it could affirm the conclusions of the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification. This document is the Council’s action on the answers. Part A gives the background and summarises an analysis of the replies made by the Institute for Ecumenical Research at Strasbourg; part B gives the premises and the text of what the Council voted.
It is the federation’s own record and counts the replies in its own categories, including four it calls difficult to interpret. It names the topics the churches found hardest and lists every church under its answer. It does not reproduce the churches’ replies themselves.
