Christianity and Liberalism
J. Gresham Machen1923
A book by a New Testament scholar at Princeton Theological Seminary arguing that the liberal theology of his day was a religion distinct from Christianity.
The preface says that the book grew out of an address given by J. Gresham Machen on 3 November 1921 and printed in The Princeton Theological Review in 1922 under the title “Liberalism or Christianity”. Its chapters set what Machen takes to be the teaching of liberalism against that of historic Christianity on doctrine, God and man, the Bible, Christ, salvation and the church.
It is one side’s case in a controversy, made by a participant. It is cited in the Fundamentals and the Modernist Controversy for Machen’s own argument.
