A. M. Mackay, Pioneer Missionary of the Church Missionary Society to Uganda
Alexander Mackay, edited by his sister1890
The life of the missionary Alexander Mackay compiled by his sister from his letters and journals, which it prints at length. His letters from Buganda in 1885 and 1886 report the killings of Christians as they happened.
Mackay was in Buganda throughout the persecution. The book is built from his own letters home, printed with their dates, and from a last survey of the mission’s history that reached the Church Missionary Society in April 1890, after his death.
The letters are contemporary and were written under threat. They give the events as an Anglican missionary knew them at the time, with his anger at the king undisguised.
