The page headed History calls the church the second largest part of the old church of the Thomas Christians. It says that contact with the Portuguese ended in the “enforced domination” of Roman Catholicism, in which the synod of Udayamperur of 1599 played the decisive part; that in 1653, “through an Oath”, the church overthrew that subjection; and that those who held out entered from 1665 into relations with bishops from the West Syrian patriarchate. The page headed The Catholicate says that after the Coonan Cross oath the church ordained the archdeacon a bishop with the name Mar Thoma I, and that bishops of that name led it from 1653 to 1816.
These are statements of what the church holds today. They name no sources and are not evidence for the events; they are cited only as that church’s reading of them.
