Martyrs Mirror
A collection of accounts of Christians who died for their faith, compiled in Dutch by Thieleman van Braght and printed in 1660. For the first Anabaptists it reproduces older accounts, letters and sentences.
Van Braght’s book gathers the stories of those he calls the defenceless Christians, who baptised only on confession of faith, from the apostles to his own century. The title page says it was compiled from chronicles, memorials and testimonies. For the sixteenth century it reproduces older documents, among them a report of Michael Sattler’s trial with the charges against him and the sentence.
It is a work of commemoration, published for Mennonite readers more than a century after the first Anabaptists died, and its dates are not always exact: it puts the death of Felix Manz in 1526, where the sentence of the Zurich court is dated January 1527. It is cited for what its documents say, with the date of compilation in mind.
