The book has eight narratives, each for a day kept in memory by the church: the felling of the first tree at Herrnhut, the statutes of 12 May 1727, the communion of 13 August 1727, the beginning of the hourly intercession, the first missions to St Thomas and to Greenland. Its preface says that the narratives are chiefly selected from the original diaries, letters and essays of the persons concerned and keep their words as far as possible, even where this is not marked.

It is therefore a church’s commemorative history built from contemporary records. Where it quotes the Herrnhut diary or a letter, as for 13 August 1727 and for Leonard Dober’s offer to go to St Thomas, it reproduces those records; its connecting narrative and its judgments are those of the compilers. See the Moravians at Herrnhut.
