Life of Huldrych Zwingli
Oswald Myconius1532
A short life of Zwingli written in 1532, the year after his death, by his friend Oswald Myconius, who had helped bring him to Zurich.
Myconius says that he put forward the name of Huldrych Zwingli when a preacher was to be chosen for the Great Minster in Zurich. He wrote this short life in Latin in 1532, the year after Zwingli’s death in battle, as a letter to a friend. He was in Zurich on the day of the battle and describes the troops leaving and the news arriving that night.
It is the account of an eyewitness to much of what it tells and of a devoted friend, written to defend Zwingli’s memory. Its dates are not all exact: it puts Zwingli’s birth about 1487, which the editor corrects to 1 January 1484.
