The record gives Tutu’s birth at Klerksdorp on 7 October 1931 and his death at Cape Town on 26 December 2021, describes him at the time of the award as bishop of Johannesburg and former secretary general of the South African Council of Churches, and gives the motivation of the prize: his role as a unifying leader in the non-violent campaign to resolve the problem of apartheid. The biographical note adds his ordination in 1960, his appointment as dean of St Mary’s Cathedral in Johannesburg in 1975, his years as bishop of Lesotho from 1976 to 1978, and his appointment as general secretary of the Council of Churches in 1978.
