Triads in Defence of the Holy Hesychasts
Nine treatises in which the Athonite monk Gregory Palamas answered Barlaam’s attack on hesychast prayer. They are his own fullest statement of his teaching on the light of Tabor and on God’s essence and energies.
Gregory Palamas wrote these nine treatises while his dispute with Barlaam of Calabria was going on; John Meyendorff, who edited the Greek text, dates them between 1338 and 1341 in his introduction to the English selection. They are works of controversy. The second and third groups quote Barlaam’s own treatises in order to refute them, so that much of what is known of Barlaam’s case comes through his opponent.
