The two documents are the pope’s side of two successive agreements made with Henry V (emperor) at the time of his imperial coronation. The first, dated 12 February in Henderson’s translation, starts from the complaint that bishops who hold cities, duchies and counties from the crown have become servants of the court, and orders those royal holdings returned. The second, dated 12 April, grants the king what the first had denied.

The documents do not say why the pope changed his position. The chronicler Ekkehard of Aura reports that the first agreement caused an uproar among the princes when it was read out in Rome and that the pope was then kept under guard by the king’s men.
