Joint Communiqué of Pope Paul VI and Patriarch Athenagoras
The statement issued by Pope Paul VI and Patriarch Athenagoras I of Constantinople at the end of their meeting in Jerusalem in January 1964. It calls the meeting a fraternal gesture and a sign of things to come.
The communiqué is dated 6 January 1964 and was issued, it says, at the end of the meeting of the two men in Jerusalem, the patriarch acting with the agreement of his synod. It gives thanks that both were led to the Holy Land, describes the meeting as a fraternal gesture inspired by the charity of Christ, and prays that it may be the sign and prelude of things to come. It says that the two met after many centuries of silence.
It makes no doctrinal statement and does not mention the events of 1054. It is cited in Rome and Constantinople Lift the Anathemas of 1054 for the meeting from which the declaration of 1965 says it grew.
