Privilege for the Scholars of Paris
Philip II Augustus1200
A charter of the French king issued after a crime in which five people were killed. It punishes the royal provost and puts students arrested in Paris under the jurisdiction of the church courts.
The charter begins with the “terrible crime” in which five of the clergy and laity of Paris were killed, sentences the provost of the city, of whom the students had complained, and then provides for the future. Royal officers may not lay hands on a student except in the act of a crime, and must then hand him over to the ecclesiastical judge; each new provost must swear before the scholars to observe this.
It is the first document in the collected charters of the University of Paris, the Chartularium.
