Pascendi Dominici Gregis
Pope Pius X8 September 1907
The encyclical in which Pius X described and condemned the teachings he called Modernism and laid down measures against them in seminaries, publishing and every diocese.
The letter is addressed to the bishops of the Catholic Church. Its first and longest part sets out, as a single system, the views on philosophy, faith, dogma, Scripture and church history that the pope attributes to “the Modernists”; the second gives what he takes to be their causes; the third orders remedies, among them the censorship of books and a council of vigilance in each diocese.
It is the pope’s account of the views he condemns. It is cited in the Fundamentals and the Modernist Controversy as the Catholic Church’s official judgment on the movement at the time.
