Proposed Scheme of Union
The draft basis of union and constitution on which the churches of South India negotiated from 1929 until they united in 1947. It was drawn up by a joint committee of Anglicans, the South India United Church and Wesleyan Methodists.
The foreword tells how the negotiations began at Tranquebar in 1919 and says that the Joint Committee met eight times between 1920 and 1929, the Wesleyan Methodists joining from the fifth meeting. The scheme that follows sets out a basis of union and the outline of a constitution for a united church.
Two of its provisions are cited in this wiki: the acceptance of the historic episcopate “in a constitutional form” with no theory of episcopacy required, and the rule that for thirty years after union ministers of the parent churches might be received without a fresh ordination. The text is that of 1929. It is cited here for those provisions as first proposed, not for the final wording of the constitution of 1947. See the Church of South India Unites Four Traditions.
