Raymond was a canon of Le Puy who was ordained priest on the expedition and served as chaplain to Raymond of Saint-Gilles, count of Toulouse. His preface says that he writes about the count, the bishop of Le Puy and their army. Krey judges that the book was written possibly no earlier than 1102, from notes made on the journey.

He is a partisan of the Provençal army and a firm believer in the visions and relics that accompanied it. He was present at Jerusalem in July 1099, and he describes the slaughter there as a judgment of God.
