Raynaldi continued the annals of Cesare Baronius from 1198 and worked from the papal registers, which he cites in his margins. Under each year he prints letters of the popes, whole or in extract, and quotes chroniclers and papal biographers, with references in the margin. He wrote some three hundred years after the plague and as a defender of the papacy; his own narrative is not evidence for the fourteenth century.

He is cited here only for the texts he reproduces. Where he quotes a medieval Life of Clement VI on the pope’s measures at Avignon, the citation says that the Life is known here through him. For the papal letters he prints see Bulls of 1348 Protecting the Jews and Inter sollicitudines (letter against the flagellants).
