Concordat between the Holy See and the German Reich
The treaty signed in the Vatican on 20 July 1933 by Cardinal Pacelli for Pius XI and Vice-Chancellor Franz von Papen for the German Reich, regulating the position of the Catholic Church in Germany.
The concordat has 34 articles and a final protocol. It guarantees the freedom of profession and public practice of the Catholic religion, the church’s right to manage its own affairs within the law that applies to all, Catholic religious instruction and Catholic confessional schools, and the protection of Catholic organisations that serve religious, cultural and charitable purposes. In article 32 the Holy See undertakes to bar clergy and religious from membership of political parties.
It is the legal text itself and is cited in Mit brennender Sorge: Pius XI on the Church in the German Reich for what the two parties agreed in 1933.
