History of Jerusalem
A history of the First Crusade by a French monk, reworking the Gesta Francorum. Its opening gives a long version of Urban II’s sermon at Clermont, with the cry ‘It is the will of God’.
Robert did not go on the crusade. A. C. Krey, in the introduction to his collection of 1921, says that he is generally identified with a monk who became abbot of Saint-Remi at Reims, counts him among three churchmen who rewrote the plain Gesta Francorum in a more literary form, says that his book was written before 1107, and notes that it was very widely copied.
His version of the sermon at Clermont is addressed to the “race of Franks”, dwells on atrocities said to have been committed against Christians in the East, and makes Jerusalem and the Holy Sepulchre the goal. It was written after the city had been taken.
