Flowers of History
The chronicle of a monk of St Albans, which runs to the year 1235. For the early thirteenth century it is a contemporary English record, and it reports the Lateran council of 1215 and the deaths and elections of the popes.
Roger of Wendover was a monk of St Albans in England and for a time prior of its cell at Belvoir. His chronicle ends in 1235. For roughly the last fifty years of it he writes of his own time, entering events year by year and copying in papal letters and other documents that reached his abbey.
He is cited here for things an English monastery heard about from Rome: who attended the council of 1215, and the days on which popes died and were succeeded. He was not present at these events, and his entries are not always in the right year; the notice of Innocent III’s death on 16 July stands among the events of 1217, although the length he gives for the pontificate fixes it in 1216.
