The homilies were preached at Sunday Mass in San Salvador and broadcast by the archdiocesan radio station YSAX, which the homily of 23 March 1980 greets. Besides expounding the readings they report the week’s events, including killings and arrests; the transcripts mark where the congregation applauded. The homily of 17 February 1980 contains the letter he had written to President Carter asking that the United States give no military aid to the Salvadoran government. The homily of 23 March 1980 ends with his appeal to the men of the army, the National Guard and the police. The last, on 24 March 1980, was given at a memorial Mass in the chapel of the Divina Providencia hospital; the transcript ends with the note that a shot rang out.
They are the primary source for what Romero said, in his own words. What he reports about events is his account, drawn in large part from the legal aid office of his archdiocese. See the Assassination of Óscar Romero.
