Royal Frankish Annals

c. AD 787–829

Year-by-year annals kept in the circle of the Frankish court, covering 741 to 829. For the reign of Louis the Pious they are a contemporary record of embassies, assemblies and baptisms at court.

The annals were written up at or near the Carolingian court by several hands, the later years close to the events. They report what the court wished to have remembered, briefly and from its own point of view. The entry for 826 records the baptism of the Danish king Harald at Mainz, the event from which Rimbert’s undated account of Ansgar’s first mission can be anchored.
