Schleiermacher’s systematic theology, in which Christian doctrine is presented as the description of Christian religious feeling. Its introduction defines piety as the consciousness of absolute dependence.

Der christliche Glaube is built of short numbered propositions, each followed by pages of explanation. Baillie translated the propositions alone, printing the edition of 1821–22 on the left-hand pages and that of 1830–31 on the right, and says in his note that the work had not then been translated into English. The numbering differs between the editions: the definition of piety is §§8–9 in the first and §§3–4 in the second.

It is cited in Schleiermacher and Modern Theology for its definitions, which are quoted in Baillie’s wording.
