The first volume opens with an account of his early life that Schleiermacher wrote in 1794 and continues with letters, chiefly to his sister Charlotte and to Henriette Herz. The editors add short connecting notes and quote Herz’s recollections of the years when he was preacher at the Charité in Berlin. The letters are private and written at the time; Herz’s recollections were written later.

It is cited in Schleiermacher and Modern Theology for the circumstances in which the Speeches were written.
