July 1925
The stenographic record of the trial of John Thomas Scopes at Dayton, Tennessee, in July 1925 for teaching evolution in a public school. It gives the charge, the testimony, the arguments and the verdict in the words spoken in court.
The volume prints the proceedings of each of the eight days of the trial in the Rhea County court, including the judge’s charge to the jury, which recites the statute and the indictment, the examination of William Jennings Bryan by Clarence Darrow on the seventh day, and the verdict and sentence. Section headings were added by the publisher.
It records what was said in court. It is cited in the Fundamentals and the Modernist Controversy for the terms of the law, the course of the trial and its result.
