Brief Record of the Second Council of Lyon
An anonymous day-by-day record of the ceremonies and sessions of the council of 1274, from the pope’s vesting on the first day to his closing blessing. It describes the arrival of the Greek envoys, the singing of the creed with the Filioque and the death of Bonaventure.
The record is the work of someone who watched the council as a ceremony: who vested the pope, where the cardinals sat, which Gospel was sung, who preached. It gives the days of the sessions, the reception of the envoys of the Greek emperor on 24 June, the mass of the feast of Peter and Paul at which the creed was sung in Latin and in Greek, and the session of 6 July at which the emperor’s letters were read and an oath was taken in his name.
It reports what was done in public and says nothing of what was negotiated. Its notice of the death of Bonaventure on Sunday 15 July, with the pope and the whole council at his burial, is the report of a contemporary who was at Lyon.
