Nostra Aetate
The Second Vatican Council’s declaration on the relation of the church to non-Christian religions, promulgated on 28 October 1965. Its fourth article, on the Jewish people, rejects the charge of collective guilt for the death of Christ.
The declaration has five articles. The second and third speak of Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam and say that the Catholic Church rejects nothing that is true and holy in these religions. The fourth, the longest, recalls the bond between the church and “Abraham’s stock”. It says that what happened in the passion of Christ cannot be charged against all Jews then living, without distinction, nor against the Jews of today; that the Jews are not to be presented as rejected or accursed by God; and that the church decries hatred, persecution and displays of antisemitism at any time and by anyone.
