Sacrosanctum Concilium
The Second Vatican Council’s constitution on the liturgy, promulgated by Paul VI on 4 December 1963. It orders a general restoration of the liturgy and allows wider use of the people’s own languages.
The constitution was promulgated on 4 December 1963. Its first chapter sets out principles: the liturgy as the summit toward which the church’s activity is directed and the source of its power (article 10), the conscious and active participation of the people as their right and duty by baptism (article 14), and a general restoration of the liturgy (article 21). Article 36 keeps Latin as the language of the Latin rites and at the same time allows the mother tongue a wider place, leaving the extent to the bishops of each territory with the confirmation of Rome.
The text gives principles and orders the liturgical books to be revised; it is not itself a revised rite. See the Second Vatican Council.
