Communiqué of the Holy Assembly of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church, May 2019
Holy Assembly of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox ChurchMay 2019
The report of the Serbian bishops’ regular assembly of 9–18 May 2019, which among other business restates that the Serbian Orthodox Church does not recognise the new church structure in Ukraine.
The assembly met at Žiča monastery and in Belgrade under Patriarch Irinej. Its communiqué covers the whole of its business; one paragraph deals with Ukraine. It calls the schism there the greatest problem of the Orthodox Church at that time, criticises Constantinople for acting on its own initiative, and states that the Serbian church is in communion only with the Ukrainian Orthodox Church led by Metropolitan Onufriy. It calls the new church a “false-church structure”. See Constantinople Grants Autocephaly to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine.
