Diary
Notes kept by Georg Spalatin, who served the electors of Saxony. An entry made at the diet of Speyer in August 1526 records a report that an English New Testament had been printed at Worms.
Spalatin was with the elector John of Saxony at the diet of Speyer in the summer of 1526. On Saturday 11 August he wrote down what a man he calls Buschius had said at supper: that six thousand copies of the New Testament in English had been printed at Worms, translated by an Englishman who was staying there with two companions and who was skilled in seven languages.
The entry is hearsay at one remove, noted on the day, from a town some twenty miles from Worms. It names no one. It is the nearest thing to a contemporary report of the printing of the New Testament in English (Worms, 1526).
