The History of the Church Missionary Society: Its Environment, Its Men and Its Work
The history of the Church Missionary Society published by the Society in 1899, its centenary year, and written by its editorial secretary. It quotes many of the Society’s papers.
Eugene Stock is named on the title page as editorial secretary of the Church Missionary Society, which published the work. He writes of the Society’s later years as a contemporary. The book quotes the Society’s letters and reports at length.
It is the Society’s account of itself. On the crisis in the Niger Mission in 1890 and 1891 it gives the committee’s side, though with open criticism of the English missionaries concerned, and its judgments on African clergy are those of an English official of the 1890s. It is cited in this wiki for dates, for the documents it quotes, and for what the Society itself admitted.
