The Lausanne Covenant: An Exposition and Commentary
A commentary on the Lausanne Covenant by the chairman of its drafting committee, written two months after the congress. Its preface and introduction record how the covenant was drafted and who took part in the congress.
The editorial note says that John Stott, rector of All Souls Church, Langham Place, London, from 1950 to 1975, chaired the drafting committee of the covenant. In his preface Stott says that a first short statement was written two or three months before the congress and sent to advisers, that a third draft was put to all participants in the middle of the congress, that many hundreds of submissions came back, and that the committee worked as many as it could into the final text. He names Hudson Armerding and Samuel Escobar as the other members of the committee. The introduction gives the dates of the congress, 16 to 25 July 1974, and the number of participants, 2,700, half of them from what he calls the Third World.
Stott says that the commentary is his personal interpretation and does not carry the authority of the congress’s planning committee. It is cited here for the facts of the drafting and of the congress, from the man best placed to know them. See the Lausanne Congress on World Evangelization.
