China’s Spiritual Need and Claims
The appeal Hudson Taylor wrote in 1865 to show how few Protestant missionaries there were in China and how many provinces had none. It was reissued, enlarged, into the 1880s, and Taylor says it led a number of people to join the China Inland Mission.
James Hudson Taylor says in the note to this edition that he wrote the pamphlet in 1865 to show the need for a further effort to evangelise China, and that it was reprinted in 1866, 1868 and 1872 and enlarged in 1884. The later editions add tables of all the Protestant missions in China and an account of how the China Inland Mission was formed.
The edition cited is the enlarged one, and it speaks of the first edition in the past tense. Where this wiki reports what the pamphlet of 1865 said, it relies on Taylor’s own statement in 1887 of what he had written then.
