A Retrospect
James Hudson Taylor1894
Hudson Taylor’s own account of his conversion, his first years in China from 1854, and the founding of the China Inland Mission in 1865, written thirty years afterwards for the mission’s supporters.
James Hudson Taylor wrote these chapters for readers who supported his mission, and they are arranged to show answers to prayer. Chapters 18 and 19 tell how he came to believe that a new agency was needed for the inland provinces, what happened on the beach at Brighton on 25 June 1865, and how the first party sailed in the Lammermuir the next May.
The book is a founder’s memoir, written long after the events and with a devotional purpose. It gives exact dates for the steps he describes.
