The introduction printed with the translation says that the council was summoned by Pope Alexander III in 1178 and met at Rome in March 1179 with about three hundred fathers. Its canons deal with papal elections, clerical discipline and, in canon 27, with heresy in southern France.

The canons as printed there do not name the followers of Waldo. Their appearance at the council is reported by Walter Map, who was there, and by the Chronicle of Laon.
