The Treaty of Münster (Instrumentum Pacis Monasteriensis)
The peace between the emperor Ferdinand III and the king of France, with their allies, signed at Münster on 24 October 1648. Together with the treaty of Osnabrück it makes up the Peace of Westphalia.
Most of the treaty concerns territory, the restoration of princes and the relations of France with the Empire. On religion it does not repeat the settlement but adopts it: article 49 says that the agreement on church lands and the exercise of religion inserted in the treaty with Sweden is confirmed here as if it were repeated word for word, and that it applies also to those called the Reformed.
The closing clause dates the treaty at Münster in Westphalia on 24 October 1648. It is cited in the Thirty Years’ War and the Peace of Westphalia together with the Treaty of Osnabrück (Instrumentum Pacis Osnabrugensis).
