The second page of the volume says that the report was presented to President Nelson Mandela on 29 October 1998 and names Archbishop Desmond Tutu as the commission’s chairperson. Chapter 3 of volume 4 records that forty-one faith communities made submissions or gave representations, and that of the Afrikaans Reformed churches only the Dutch Reformed Church did so. It treats the faith communities as agents of oppression, as victims and as opponents of it.
For this wiki the chapter is a primary source for the commission’s own findings and a near source for what the churches said to it. It summarizes and quotes their submissions and does not print them, and its chairperson was himself a churchman who had taken part in the events. See the Churches and Apartheid.
