Typikon of John Tzimiskes (the Tragos)
A common rule for all the monks of Mount Athos, drawn up by the monk Euthymios of Stoudios after an imperial inquiry into complaints against Athanasius of the Lavra, and signed by the emperor and the superiors.
The document records an inquiry. Monks of Athos had gone to the emperor to complain of Athanasius the Athonite; the emperor sent Euthymios, a monk of the Stoudios monastery in Constantinople, who sat for a week with all the superiors, found both sides blameless and then set down twenty-eight rules with the agreement of all the superiors. The original charter is still kept at the Protaton in Karyes, according to the translators. Its nickname, the Tragos or “billy goat”, alludes, the translators say, to the parchment on which it is written.
