The frame of government of the United States, signed in convention on 17 September 1787. Its sixth article forbids any religious test for federal office.
The original Constitution mentions religion once. Article VI requires legislators and officers of the United States and of the states to be bound by oath or affirmation to support the Constitution, and adds that no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification for any office or public trust under the United States.
