Letter of the University of Paris on Ending the Schism
The University of Paris1393, as dated in the source book
The advice of the masters of Paris to the king of France on how to end the papal schism. It proposes three ways, the resignation of both claimants, arbitration, or a general council.
According to the editors’ note, the king of France asked the university in 1393 to find a way out of the schism, each master gave his opinion in writing, and a commission of fifty-four drew up the answer. The extracts give the three ways it proposed: that both claimants resign; that they submit to arbitrators; or, if they would do neither, that the matter be left to a general council, in which doctors of theology and law might sit with the bishops.
The third way is the one that was taken, at Pisa in 1409 and at Constance in 1414. See the Great Western Schism.
