The Waldensians: Origins (Chiesa Evangelica Valdese)
Chiesa Evangelica Valdese (Union of the Methodist and Waldensian Churches)Current church website
The present-day Waldensian Church’s own short account of its history, from Waldo of Lyon in the twelfth century through persecution, adhesion to the Reformation in 1532 and civil rights in 1848.
This is not a medieval source. It is cited as the statement of the church that descends from the movement, to set beside medieval accounts written by its opponents. It presents Waldo as a merchant of Lyon who sold his goods for the poor and had parts of Scripture translated, and says that he and his companions preached without intending to found a new church.
For the events of the twelfth century it has no independent authority; for how Waldensians understand their own beginnings it is the primary document.
