The official record of the assembly that constituted the World Council of Churches in 1948. It prints the assembly’s message, a day-by-day account of its sessions, the reports of its sections, the constitution with the Basis, and the list of delegates.

The report was compiled by the council’s staff and published under the name of its general secretary, Willem Visser ‘t Hooft, whose preface is dated Geneva, September 1948. The introduction sketches the council’s origins as its founders saw them, in the missionary movement and the movements called Life and Work and Faith and Order.

It is the council’s own record and gives its own view of itself. It is the primary source for what the assembly resolved, for the wording of the Basis and for who was present. See the World Council of Churches Is Founded.
