The statement accepts paragraphs 15 to 17 of the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification as corresponding to Methodist doctrine and agrees with what Lutherans and Catholics say together on the disputed topics. Its fourth paragraph then describes Methodist teaching in its own terms, drawing on John Wesley’s sermons: prevenient grace, the link between justification and sanctification, and Christian perfection. It ends with an Official Common Affirmation in which the Catholic Church and the Lutheran World Federation welcome the statement. See Lutherans and Catholics Agree on Justification.
