The letters were written to friends and patrons in Germany and England and published to win support for the mission; the editor says that the German originals were published by Joachim Lange, professor at Halle. They give the missionaries’ own view of their work, of the people they called Malabarians and of the opposition they met from Europeans in the colony. Part I contains the letters of 1706 and 1707, Part II letters down to 1710, and Part III later letters and documents down to 1714, among them a letter of the English chaplain at Madras and an account of the measures taken in Denmark.

The preliminary discourse, by the English editor, says where the two men were born and educated. It is a contemporary’s statement, not their own. See the Tranquebar Mission.
