Huldrych Zwingli22–23 August 1522

Zwingli’s reply of August 1522 to an admonition from the bishop of Constance. In it he gives an account of what he had preached in Zurich since his arrival.

In May 1522 the bishop of Constance sent the chapter of the Great Minster in Zurich an admonition against new teachings. It did not name Huldrych Zwingli, but he took it as aimed at himself and answered point by point in this Latin defence.

The passage cited here is his own list of the biblical books he had preached through, in order, beginning with Matthew. He adds that when he began he had not yet heard the name of those to whose party he was now said to belong. It is a statement in his own defence and should be read as one.
