Huldrych Zwingli addressed the tract to the Christians of Zurich. He says that some of them had eaten meat, eggs and cheese during the fast, that others took offence, and that the council had been obliged to look into it. He then argues from the New Testament that fasting rules are human commands and that each Christian is free to keep them or not, though no one should use the freedom to give offence.

It shows how the dispute in Zurich came into the open: over a custom, argued from the Bible, before the city’s council.
