The Sixty-seven Articles
Huldrych ZwingliJanuary 1523
The propositions that Zwingli printed for the disputation held before the Zurich council on 29 January 1523. He offers to defend them from Scripture alone.
Huldrych Zwingli drew up the articles as a summary of what he had preached in Zurich. The heading says that he confesses to have preached them on the basis of Scripture and will let himself be corrected, “but only from said Scriptures”. They begin with the gospel and Christ as the only way to salvation and go on to the pope, the mass, the intercession of saints, good works, fasting, clerical marriage, the power of magistrates and purgatory.
The articles are in Zwingli’s own words. They were written for a debate and state positions without the arguments.
