Belgian cardinal who in May 1974 gathered theologians and lay leaders at Malines to write the first of the Malines Documents on the Catholic Charismatic Renewal.

The edition of his writings published by the Association FIAT gives his dates as 16 July 1904 to 6 May 1996 (Malines Document 1 (1974), title page). From 21 to 26 May 1974 he gathered a small international team of theologians and lay leaders at Malines in Belgium, who drew up a statement of theological and pastoral guidance on the charismatic renewal among Catholics (Malines Document 1 (1974), Introduction).     The Charismatic Renewal

    Speaking in tongues and other gifts associated with Pentecostalism appear in the older churches. An Episcopal rector in California tells his parish of his experience in 1960, and Catholics date their charismatic renewal from a retreat of students near Pittsburgh in 1967.
