Michael von Faulhaber

Archbishop of Munich and Freising, 1917–1952; cardinal from 19211869 – 1952Also: Cardinal Faulhaber

Archbishop of Munich and Freising and cardinal, who was in Rome with other German bishops in January 1937 and, according to the editors of his diaries, took a decisive part in preparing the encyclical Mit brennender Sorge.

The biography that accompanies the critical edition of his diaries gives his birth on 5 March 1869 at Klosterheidenfeld in Lower Franconia, his appointment as archbishop of Munich and Freising in 1917, his creation as cardinal by Benedict XV in 1921 and his death in Munich on 12 June 1952. Its authors state that he took a decisive part in the preparatory work for the encyclical Mit brennender Sorge (Faulhaber, Diaries, editors’ biography).

His own diary for 14 to 28 January 1937 records a stay in Rome: two meetings, with the bishops, at Cardinal Pacelli’s, an hour with the pope in his sickroom on Sunday 17 January, and a farewell audience on the 23rd (Faulhaber, Diaries, 14–28 January 1937). See Mit brennender Sorge: Pius XI on the Church in the German Reich.
