Watchman Nee

Founder of the Little Flock assembliesAlso: Ni Tuosheng, Ni To-sheng, Watchman Ni

Chinese preacher named by American church editors in 1963 as the founder of the independent assemblies known in English as the Little Flock. They report that the leaders of its Shanghai meeting house had been suppressed by 1956.

The American editors of the Three-Self Movement’s documents identify Ni To-sheng, known in English as Watchman Nee, as the founder of the indigenous church usually called the Little Flock (Jones, Documents of the Three-Self Movement, Biographical Index, Ni To-sheng). They write that by 1956 the dissenting leaders of the Little Flock had been suppressed, especially those centred on the Nanyang Road meeting house in Shanghai (Jones, Documents of the Three-Self Movement, editors’ introduction, on the committee meeting of March 1956). The same note says that he was imprisoned and, some years later, sentenced to a long term (Jones, Documents of the Three-Self Movement, Biographical Index, Ni To-sheng). These are the editors’ statements, made in New York in 1963; the dates and the length of the sentence are not repeated here, because no document of the time open to the reader was found to check them.
