Capital of Prussia, where Friedrich Schleiermacher was preacher at the Charité hospital when he wrote his Speeches on Religion in 1799.
Friedrich Schleiermacher was appointed chaplain to the Charité in Berlin in 1796 and lived in the hospital, whose surroundings were then uninhabited, as his friend Henriette Herz recalled (Schleiermacher, Life in Letters, vol. 1, pp. 133, 138). See Schleiermacher and Modern Theology.

In 1799 Friedrich Schleiermacher, a hospital preacher in Berlin, publishes Speeches on Religion for its cultured despisers: religion is neither knowledge nor morals but feeling, a sense and taste for the Infinite. His later dogmatics builds Christian doctrine on that ground.
